  • Musicianship & Theory Class:

From Grade 4 or 5 onwards, learning a bit of music theory can make a huge difference! It helps students read and write music with confidence, understand chords and scales, and even start writing their own songs—skills that make learning music way more holistic.

And for students preparing for the AMEB Comprehensive Piano, Violin or Vocal Exams in Grades 6, 7, 8+ the AMEB requires the matching Musicianship exams of Grades 2 to 6).

To make music theory easier and more accessible, we offer a discounted online Musicianship Class with Anne. In a small, lively group, students learn music literacy and general knowledge in a way that’s interactive and fun. It’s perfect for exam prep—or for anyone wanting a bit more musical know-how, including high school or HSC students!

Students taking piano, singing, or violin lessons with us can add this class at a special 40% discount—a smart, affordable way to supercharge their skills.

    • Studio Policy 2026

Thank you for re-enrollilng - we’re looking forward to continuing the musical journey with you this year! These policies might look serious, but they’re really here just to make sure lessons run smoothly, students thrive, and we all get to have fun learning and making music together.

      # Enrolment & Lesson Placement:
Your enrolment reserves a weekly lesson time just for you for the entire year. Your teacher will be there and ready to teach at that time each week—lesson prepared and ready to make learning music rewarding and fun! Not sure when lessons are on? Term dates always available at: hilbertsmusic.com (on the 'Diary' tab).

      # Fees & Payments:
Lesson fees are due at each lesson or in advance. Full-term payments get a 10%+ discount—that’s a free lesson every term, just for being organized! Late payments may lose discounts and incur an admin fee to cover the extra time it takes us to send out reminders.

      # Lesson Length:
Please choose the lesson length that suits your child and their current level. If your child wants to get ahead and work through two grade levels in one year, adding just an extra 15 minutes each week gives us the time to cover the extra material thoroughly—while keeping lessons positive, motivating, and enjoyable rather than rushed. And longer lessons come with a discount too, supporting both musical progress and your family budget!

      # Pupil-Free Days & Public Holidays:
Lessons go ahead even if the school calls a pupil-free day. Public holidays? Lessons usually run as normal, but let us know a week ahead if you have a commitment—we’ll find a backup slot in the same week.

      # Pupil-Free Days & Public Holidays:
Wondering what to do if you get sick, have a commitment clash, or are going on holidays during term time?  Well, your lesson time is still reserved just for your child, as we promised, so all lessons must be paid for whether they attend or not.

But here are some options so they don’t necessarily have to miss out:

      - Take an online or phone lesson at your usual time - great for sniffles, car trouble or other unexpected issues.
      - Family Vacation or School Excursion? Send recordings before you go—your teacher will review them as if you were in your lesson and send you feedback including new, appropriate practice strategies.
      - You can even swap your lesson time with another student by using our 'Swap List' or 'Vacant Lesson' list.

--> To take advantage of these options please give one week’s prior notice (except in the case of illness) so teachers know who to expect and what lessons to prepare.

However, if none of these options work for you, we’ll still use the time just for your child, planning and prepping their music and materials for future lessons.

      # Teacher Absence:
Occasionally your teacher may be off fighting dragons, attending competitions, or learning new tricks (yes, even teachers have homework!). Lessons will go online or be rescheduled – they’ll let you know.

      # Music Use & Copyright:
We love to freely hand out studio-licensed and copyright-free music whenever possible.  But for music which is currently within the copyright period (composed in the last 70+ years) all students must have original music—no photocopying allowed as living composers need to eat (and the copyright police are scary!) Budget around $90–$120/year so you can buy real music books when needed.

      # Practice Recommendations:
Practice is the magic that turns ‘oops’ into ‘wow!’ Suggested times below, will help your child flourish and have fun gaining new skills!

      · Beginners: 5 minutes a day helps them develop daily ‘practice habits’ (just like brushing teeth!)

      · Elementary: Preliminary & Grade 2: 10–20 minutes each day

      · Intermediate: Grades 3 to 5: 20–40 minutes each day

      · Advancing: Grade 6 to 8: 60–90 minutes each day

      · Performance Certificate & Diplomas: 1.5 to 3 hours a day

Need help with at home practice? Just ask—we have plenty of ideas to make it engaging, effective and more enjoyable!

      # At-home Instrument:
For piano students, an in-tune piano at home is essential—an acoustic piano is ideal, but even a digital piano with hammer-weighted keys is fine up to grade 1. (Spring-loaded keyboards are great for mucking around on, but aren’t responsive enough to let you make real progress). Annual tuning is recommended to keep acoustic pianos well-maintained and sounding good.  Advancing students may need to upgrade to a piano that can handle the advanced tone, touch and technique we teach.

Need help sourcing a piano or violin? Feel free to reach out - we are always happy to help.

      # Photos & Achievements:
We love to celebrate achievements! Photos and videos may appear in newsletters, on the website, or in concert recordings or other materials—surnames never included. Want to opt out? Let us know on your enrolment form and remind your child to duck out of the shot during group photos.

      # Communication:
Contact us in person, phone, email, or text message. (No voicemail or social media messages as these are not monitored.) Questions? Call or text Anne: 0402 824 353.

      # Discontinuing Lessons:
We ask for four weeks’ notice so your spot can be offered to a new student. Less notice may incur a four-lesson fee. Mid-term cancellation voids any discounts. (Relevant refunds to be requested by email within 14 days of last lesson attended - refunds incur an admin fee to cover teacher’s extra admin time for this).

      Final Note
Learning music is amazing for the brain and the soul (and for making metronomes important household items!) These policies keep things running smoothly, so teachers & students can focus on what matters most: having fun, learning music…and playing a concerto one day.
