Abide Adoption and Family Services
Supporting Families with Compassion, Professionalism, and Care
At Abide Adoption and Family Services, we are dedicated to providing friendly, professional services with a reliable customer experience and a personal touch.
Legal Framework:
The legal foundation for adoptions in Alberta is set out in the Child, Youth & Family Enhancement Act and the Family Law Act. These Acts outline who is considered a guardian and who must provide legal consent for an adoption.
-If a child is 12 years of age or older, they are required to provide their own consent.
-Home Assessment Reports (HARs) are generally not required for this type of adoption; however, a Judge may order one at their discretion.
-In the case of a private direct placement, the birth parents have the right to request a HAR, which must be completed before the adoption application is submitted to the Court.
-Birth parents also have the right to request to view your criminal record check.
Consent and Revocation
All birth parents or legal guardians have 10 days to revoke their consent after signing the Consent by a Guardian for Adoption.
If consent is revoked, please contact Abide Adoption and Family Services immediately so we can guide you through the next steps.
Our Role in Your Adoption Process
We are here to reduce the stress often associated with adoption paperwork and court procedures. Our team will:
-Prepare and complete your adoption application
-Draft the necessary affidavits
-File your adoption application with the Court of King’s Bench on your behalf
-Once your application is accepted and assigned a file number, we will serve Children & Family Services (CFS) with a copy of the adoption application — this is required in all adoptions.
If needed, we can also assist in serving the biological parents upon your request.
Additional Information
